Health tips for travelling abroad
August 4, 2006A simple Holiday Health Guide has been launched by travel trade body ABTA with tips on how to prepare for trips abroad, as well as advice for staying healthy at your destination.
The eight-page booklet is available online and starts with advice about actions needed before leaving the UK, especially if visiting remote destinations.
When travelling to at-risk locations the guide recommends seeking advice at least six weeks before going away, either from a GP or at a travel clinic, as injections may be needed or a course of treatment may have to be taken.
Keith Betton, head of corporate affairs at ABTA, said: "The most recent figures show that UK residents take over 60 million visits abroad each year, so it is important that information to help protect people against risk factors such as disease, illness and accidents is available."
The booklet also explains how to obtain travel health advice and ways to protect yourself from diseases specific to various countries, plus how to avoid road accidents and how to make sure you don’t become a victim of crime while away.
The Holiday Health Guide is supported by the British Travel Health Association and produced by Sanofi Pasteur MSD. Copies of the booklet are also available at ABTA recognised travel agents on the high street.
