Disruption at Birmingham Airport
June 15, 2006An incident at Birmingham International Airport today (June 15) is expected to result in severe delays for passengers.
A Boeing 737 freight plane travelling from Liege in Belgium to Stansted Airport that had been diverted to Birmingham International developed a problem with its undercarriage and was forced to make an emergency landing.
Neither of the two crew members were hurt.
However, the damaged aircraft is still on the runway at Birmingham and is unlikely to be moved before this evening. According to the airport, "only a very limited operation can take place" on a shorter length of runway.
Passengers with flights today are still being advised to check in as usual, however. Airlines will be making alternative arrangements for customers and some flights have been diverted to other airports.
A bussing operation is also apparently underway to take passengers to and from the airport.
Airport spokesman John Morris told the BBC: "We are looking to see if there are any ways of working around this. People should turn up as normal to the airport, but expect heavy delays."
