Terminal 2 to be terminated
March 28, 2006BAA has announced that Heathrow's Terminal 2 will close for business when the new Terminal 5 opens, expected in 2008.
The terminal for short-haul flights is Heathrow's oldest terminal building, but the drop in passenger numbers resulting from an airline reshuffle will make it unsustainable.
With a number of airlines moving into Terminal 5, passenger flow through Terminal 2 will be cut from around nine million to 1.5 million a year.
Last year BAA said that the terminal could be sacrificed as part of its £1.5 billion Heathrow East project, currently awaiting planning permission.
It is hoped that this project will be ready in time to meet the increased passenger demand expected for the 2012 Olympics.
However, today the group confirmed that Terminal 2 would close indefinitely regardless of progress with Heathrow East.
A company spokesperson commented: "While this decision to close Terminal 2 is made with a mixture of sadness and nostalgia, it must be remembered that Terminal 2 is Heathrow's first and oldest terminal."
