Edinburgh Airport set for tram link
March 24, 2006Edinburgh Airport is to receive a £450 million tram service connecting it to the city centre.
Passengers will be able to take a tram from Western Harbour to the airport in a scaled-down version of the more ambitious original plans that featured two routes.
The tramline will complement the high quality bus service already bringing passengers to and from the city centre.
Edinburgh Central MSP Sarah Boyack told The Scotsman that the tram service would benefit people in years to come.
“We have an opportunity of money coming from the (Scottish) Executive to build the high quality transport infrastructure we need in this city. We cannot afford to pass that by. The citizens of the future will not forgive us," she said.
The approved bill for the Western Harbour link is designed to cope with an estimated 12,000 additional vehicles in the Scottish capital by 2015. A second connection is to be debated in parliament next week.
Travellers heading to Edinburgh Airport are set to have more transport options in the future as plans for a rail link are making their way through the Scottish Parliament (see Edinburgh rail link plans submitted).
