Cheap flights round-up
March 18, 2006Budget travellers got a boost this week as the UK's top low-cost airlines served up new routes to the likes of Sylt, Copenhagen and Lanzarote.
It was also a great week for savings and deals, with Ryanair leading the way with a promotion linked to the number of Irish horses winning in this week's Cheltenham Festival.
Here we bring you a round up of this week's main news, just in case you missed it first time round.
Edinburgh's new routes to Scandinavia
Kicking things off, budget airline Sterling.dk put a smile on the face of Scottish travellers by announcing a new route from Edinburgh to Copenhagen.
Jet2.com adds Leeds to Lanzarote service
Jet2.com is trying to ensure that northerners have all-year round access to the sun-drenched Canary Isles, with the launch of a new twice weekly service to Lanzarote.
Heathrow gets new link to Bulgaria
Hemus Air became the latest airline to announce a new link between the UK and upcoming tourist hotspot Bulgaria. The Heathrow to Sofia service will begin in mid-April.
Air Berlin announces cheap flights to Sylt
Although the picturesque Danish island has always been short of cheap flight links, low-cost airline Air Berlin is correcting this by launching a Stansted service in May.
Belfast to Stansted route launched by Air Berlin
The low-cost German airline was at it again, this time adding a within-UK service to its timetable as it continues to beef up its presence outside of its home market. Flights start on May 2 with one-way tickets from £19, including taxes and charges.
Oxford to Cambridge service folds
The week's only negative development was the news that no-frills airline Sky Commuter will fold its new link between the two university cities.
Ryanair's racing promotion
Still, that was more than compensated for by the slew of savings and deals launched by Europe's principal discount airlines.
As the sponsor of the one of the big races at this year's Cheltenham festival, Ryanair thought it only fair to take a punt itself.
It said it would offer one extra route for £10 for every horse from Ireland that won - and Irish eyes were smiling when War of Attrition, owned by Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary, stormed home to win the Gold Cup.
Other deals out this week included:
£16.99 one-way fares to Europe with Thomsonfly
70p flights to Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart with Germanwings
Scandinavian savings with Sterling
