Aberdeen airport outstrips Scottish rivals
March 10, 2006Aberdeen is Scotland's fastest-growing major airport, new passenger statistics reveal.
With international routes to the likes of Bergen, Copenhagen and Dublin proving increasingly popular, the airport handled 11 per cent more passengers in February than the same month last year.
That outstripped growth at both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, according to the Aberdeen Press and Journal.
Some 211,354 passengers passed through its doors last month, breaching the 200,000 barrier for the first time in February.
The double-digit growth was thanks mainly to a growing appetite for international travel, with passengers bound for non-UK destinations up 19 per cent.
Airport boss Andy Flower said: "It is significant that in what is traditionally a quiet month, Aberdeen Airport achieved a new record."
More passengers are set to flock to the airport later this year, with a new route to Amsterdam set to debut on March 27.
And Aberdeenshire council this week gave its backing to a £50 million, ten-year expansion plan at Scotland's most northerly major airport.
