Wizz Air sets sights on CEE dominance
January 6, 2006Budget airline Wizz Air believes it will be the largest airline in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) within two years after celebrating a three-fold increase in passenger number in 2005.
That's great news for Brits seeking cheap flights to the likes of Budapest – which Wizz Air serves directly from London Luton – Bulgaria, Poland and Lithuania.
The low-cost airline's passenger numbers mushroomed from 568,000 to 1.89 million last year, making it one of Europe's fastest growing airlines.
Wizz Air is planning to offer an increased itinerary of 50 summer routes and believes it will soon become a dominant force in the region.
"Wizz Air will continue to grow its business on its existing markets and will expand operations into new countries in CEE in 2006," commented Wizz Air CEO, Jozsef Varadi.
"The airline is well on track to hit the three million passenger mark this year and to become the single biggest airline in the region within two years, likely the only CEE based low cost airline at that time."
Market analysts agree that Wizz Air will be one of the likely survivors of an upcoming bloodbath in the European low-cost airline sector, courtesy of its concentration on a specific airspace.
