Cheap flights to Washington
January 19, 2006
Business travellers will be able to pick up cheaper flights to USA from this spring.
On March 17, budget airline MAXjet will launch a service to Washington Dulles from Stansted, with return tickets initially costing $1,000 (£570), including taxes and charges.
MAXjet refers to itself as a "luxury low-fare airline" and is attempting to shatter preconceptions of budget air travel by running transatlantic flights.
It's the second transatlantic route served up by the budget airline after it launched a six flights-a-week Stansted to New York service in November. Flights will run daily from March 18.
The Washington service will depart four times a week from Stansted at 1.00pm, touching down on US turf at 4.30pm the same day.
Ticket prices will rise to $1,750 (£997) when the introductory offer is withdrawn.
The launch of the Washington service is slightly behind schedule as last year MAXjet said it would debut in late February and initially planned five flights a week.
Other budget carriers, such as easyJet and Ryanair, have kept long-haul routes at arm's length due to a perceived lack of profits.
But MAXjet, which claims to undercut rivals' prices by between 50 and 70 per cent, is convinced an all business class, low-cost model can work on transatlantic routes.
