Germanwings doubles Airbus fleet
December 13, 2005Germany's leading low-cost airline Germanwings could be poised to add more UK flights after virtually doubling its fleet of Airbus A319 planes.
The no-frills airline has ordered 18 new A319s directly from Airbus, bringing its total A319 fleet to 37.
The planes can carry 156 passengers and feature a comfortable single-class cabin layout.
New UK routes could well be on the agenda as the fast-growing airline bids to beef up its European presence.
Germanwings currently flies to its base in Cologne from Gatwick, Stansted and Birmingham and to Stuttgart in the south of Germany from Stansted.
The budget airline – an affiliate of German flag carrier Lufthansa - also began flying from Gatwick to Hamburg last month as it selected the city as its fourth German hub.
The new orders will allow the budget airline to continue its run of expansion since its foundation in 2002.
Germanwings also recently expanded its Airbus single-aisle aircraft fleet.
