Go behind the scenes with SN Brussels
September 28, 2005Millions of people take to the skies every day, yet few of us have any idea what goes on behind the scenes to make air travel possible.
This could be about to change, with SN Brussels giving passengers the chance to gain an insight into the workings of a major European airline.
The low-cost airline is hosting an open day this Sunday, October 2, giving travellers the freedom to explore all aspects of its operations. Visitors will be able to view the engine workshop in the SN hangar, explore the staff areas and the cockpit of its planes and discover the safety measures in place in case a flight encounters any difficulties.
SN will operate seven 45-minute discovery flights throughout the day (Price: €35), giving passengers the chance to enter the cockpit while the plane is in the air. Flight attendants will talk them through their work at each stage of the flight, from take-off through to landing.
The airline's pilots have designed a flight simulator for the occasion, and will be hosting a number of pilot academy sessions, allowing visitors to gain an insight into a pilot's work. There will even be an opportunity to visitors to take control of a virtual flight.
There is also the chance to board one of the Asterix jets that SN Brussels have recently brought into operation. Air-traffic controllers from Brussels National Airport will also be on hand to explain how their navigation system works.
The proceedings take place at the airline's maintenance hangar at Brussels National Airport.
Visitors from the UK who want to check out proceedings can fly SN to the Belgian capital from Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Jersey, London Gatwick, Manchester and Newcastle airports.
Alternatively, bmi, British Airways and Ryanair all offer low-cost flight deals to Brussels from airports across the UK.
The SN Brussels open day runs from 9.00am until 5.00pm on Sunday October 2.
