BA follows Virgin's fuel charge increase
September 8, 2005British Airways has become the third major European airline to announce an increase in fuel surcharges in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The airline announced today that it is increasing fuel charges on all long-haul tickets to £30.
Short-haul charges remain unchanged at £8 per ticket.
The increase comes into effect on all tickets purchased from Monday September 12 and represents a 25 per cent increase on the previous long-haul charge of £24.
BA has attributed the increase directly to the effects of the hurricane, which has pushed oil prices beyond $70 a barrel.
Yesterday, both Virgin Atlantic and Dutch airline KLM announced that they were increasing their fuel charges.
Virgin has raised its charge to £30 per ticket from today, while KLM increased its additional charges by €4 for short-haul and €10 for long-haul flights.
Other European airlines are expected to follow suit in the next few days.
