Ryanair potty about Poland
August 4, 2005It seems that European low-cost airlines cannot get enough of Poland.
Following yesterday's revelation that the German low-cost airline, Germanwings, is considering a permanent base in Poland, today, rival airline Ryanair admitted that it too has its sights set on the new European Union member-state.
Europe's premier budget airline believes that Poland is set to become a leading destination by the end of the decade.
Earlier this year, the Irish no-frills airline began a number of new flights between London Stansted and new destinations in Poland.
Londoners can now take advantage of cheap flights to Gdansk, Bydgoszcz, Szczecin and Rzeszow.
So far the flights have proved popular with business and leisure passengers alike, with Ryanair hoping that at least one million passengers will fly to Poland with the no frills airline next year.
This has led the airline's ebullient chief executive, Michael O'Leary, to believe that demand for Polish flights is sufficient to warrant more flights and more destinations.
Mr O'Leary confirmed that up to three new Polish connections would be introduced this year, while the no-frills airline will also increase the frequency of flights on the most popular Polish routes.
"Twelve months ago I was of an opinion that flying to Poland does not make sense. I have changed my mind - in 2006 we will fly one million passengers on routes to Poland, while over the next five years another five million," he commented in an interview with a Polish newspaper.
The budget airline has said that it is already in negotiations with a number of airports in the country, believed to be Katowice, Dęblin, Lublin-Niedźwiada, Szczytno and Białystok.
Passengers should expect to hear a lot more about Poland in the future.
